Femomenon: Exploring Femininity Through Critical Design explores various feminist theories surrounding femininity and feminine identity, as well as the challenges and critiques feminine expression and presentation face in society through my interpretation of  hyper-feminine imagery, defined as an, “ideal at one end of a hegemonic continuum” and typically portrays a “girly-girl” on a scale of femininity. Through researching intersectional feminist perspectives I have been able to better understand the many facets of feminism and ways in which women and femininity are marginalized by society.

While also recognizing that femininity is non-monolithic, my art depicts those challenges and hypocrisies faced by women and feminine identifying or presenting individuals, as well as explores symbolism associated with femininity through avenues such as intersectionality and intersectional feminism, femmephobia, systemic misogyny in the patriarchy, the male gaze, the discredit of  “women’s work” throughout history, and femininity in the marketplace in order to critically reflect on my own personal relationship to femininity and explore femininity as a socially constructed phenomenon.
